Hnnnn. I think I've officially decided on getting a Rottweiler. I've been going back and for for a while on breed, but I want to feel safe. I was thinking about a border for a while as I really do love borders and they're smaller (Ruger was gigantic for a border collie, many people that had met him don't actually realize that borders are usually much smaller than that, but there is no breed standard), but I feel that a rottie will suit more of my need for that time, and likely be a measure more mellow and quiet indoors. (Partially because I will not tolerate the dog having bad manners.)
I'm looking at a 3 month old in Tracy, but I won't actually fill out any adoption applications until we're moved. I would like to rescue one, but I do want it to be young enough that I can get it all socialized with other dogs, kids like Jilly and Bella, the roomies' cats, and teach proper pack behavior/good manners. I could do that with a full grown dog and sometime in the future I may rescue an adult depending on how things/life goes, but at this time I don't need a dog that has to un-learn bad habits or issues.
(For example, Angela's dog's previous owner taught him to jump up on people because it's OH SO CUTE when they're puppies...not so much when he's a full grown male german shepherd, and I really don't need to get a dog home and find out that it's a cat killer or something.)
If I absolutely can't swing it and no place will rent to me with a rottie, I suppose I'll scale down slightly, though I am very, VERY adamant about this.
Hopefully the roomies won't tolerate any disrespect from the dog either and discipline him properly if need be (regardless of breed). I want the entire thing to work out for everyone, of course, the whole situation. I know not everyone is comfortable with dogs, but I have never lived without them, so it makes me highly nervous not to have them. I think things will be fine since I intend to start with a puppy/young dog that can be easily dominated by any of us, and I'll be looking for a more submissive personality.
No, it isn't something I'm taking lightly, though I'll fully admit that my heart is set on it.
I'm determined to make the housing situation work, and determined to make my dog situation work.
